Call it America’s true Independence Day. Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, marks the day that news of emancipation finally reached the last slavery-infested corners of the traitorous south after the end of the Civil War.
Now a federal holiday, Juneteenth has taken on more prominence in recent years and is celebrated across the country. Legacy Builders marked the occasion with an event at The Center in Hollywood.
“Last night was amazing,” Legacy Builders founder Latonya Hopson said.
The group launched its Legacy Talk series, a program designed to create “a powerful dialogue about Black liberation, uplifting voices of diverse communities and celebrating the Black culture and fostering unity.”
Juneteenth falls during the height of Pride month, amplifying the ability to showcase the accomplishments of the Black LGBTQ community.
The list of participants was a part of South Florida’s queer community, including Tiffany Arieagus, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, comedian/activist Natalie Tyler, Lorenzo Robertson and many more.
The night also included presentation of The Legacy Awards. Jasmine McKenzie received the Justice Warrior Award, LeNora Jaye got the Unity In Diversity Award, G Wright got the Unity In Service Award, and Thornell Jones Jr. was presented the Unity In Community Award.
When asked about the significance of their Annual Juneteenth Pride Celebration, founding member Rico Milan said it's about seeing joy, connection, and culture shine brightest when we celebrate together.
