For the LGBTQ community to thrive, there must be a strong foundation consisting of activism, passion, and vision. For nearly 14 years, the Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce has supported that mission.
Now its founder, Keith Blackburn, is stepping back.
“I’ve watched the chamber grow from a single member to over 350, and it has successfully stabilized after the challenges of COVID,” he said. “With the organization now in a strong position, I believe this is an ideal time to welcome new leadership and fresh perspectives.”
Blackburn has seen a lot of growth in support for LGBTQ businesses, but the pendulum is swinging back the other way. Many companies, both large and small, feel political and community-based pressure to scale back or completely abandon their LGBTQ customers. He believes an LGBTQ chamber is more important than ever.
“The State of Florida has targeted our community on multiple fronts, and some within our community have responded by calling for boycotts that, unfortunately, have led to lost business and economic harm. Compounding these challenges, there’s been a national trend of large corporations scaling back their support for DEI programs.”
Blackburn decided to retire about a year ago, but waited until he found the right person to succeed him. That person is Jason Nuñez. Blackburn believes he’s the person to take The Chamber to the next level.
“[He will] bring in his own ideas and develop new programs for the GFLGLCC while also learning and upholding our existing programs and procedures.”
As for Blackburn, he’s not planning a quiet retirement.
“Starting Jan. 1, I’ll step into a Founding Advisor role for the GFLGLCC, committing six months to support a smooth transition for Jason. I also own and manage five Airbnb properties in Medellin, Colombia, which will keep me busy. Plus, I’m excited to have more time for travel and discovering new places and cultures, a passion of mine.”
