A barge, booze, and a bangin’ morning on the water. The largest Pride on the water is coming back. FLoatarama sets sail June 13 for the annual party to raise money for youth organizations.
“We’ve come up with this mantra of ‘have fun, do good,’” Roderick MacKenzie said. He co-founded the organization with his husband, Scott Schramm.
This year’s iteration starts and ends at Bokampers on the intracoastal at Oakland Park Blvd. and A1A. Grand Marshal will be Marysol Patton from the Real Housewives of Miami. There will be DJs, other entertainers, and Schramm even teased a surprise “in” the water.
The event started as a pandemic workaround. In 2020, Pride events were cancelled and social distancing was a thing. Schramm and MacKenzie got together with other boat owners and created a parade through Fort Lauderdale and up the intracoastal.
It was such a success that it returned the next year and has morphed into a mega-yacht party. “Every year it gets bigger and bigger. We’ve got great support from the community,” Schramm said.
Eventually FLoatarama began raising money for queer youth and has given away more than $400,000.
“The scholarship has grown and become such a part of our fundraising,” Schramm said. “We’ve been able to support so many other local organizations.”
“Last year we gave away $160,000 to local organizations,” MacKenzie added.
Once the yacht docks, the party will continue on Bokampers’ deck. For more information and tickets, visit FLoatarama.org.
