South Florida is a paradise for gay nude recreation. The weather (with some exceptions) allows for year-round naked fun; and though state officials oppose public nudity (and constantly threaten to do away with it), thus far they have allowed South Floridians, residents, and tourists, like, limited freedom to let it all hang out.
Our only rival in this department is Palm Springs, which enjoys a more liberal state government but is in the middle of a desert. On the other hand, here in South Florida, we enjoy Haulover, a world-famous clothing-optional beach, as well as guest houses and nearby resorts like Camp Mars or Vitambi. But most of all, we have naked pool parties.
The popularity of swimming pools in South Florida might seem strange, considering our proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and its warm water beaches (including Haulover). But many of us prefer the privacy and relative tranquility of a freshwater pool. South Florida developers providentially dotted the landscape with lavish houses blessed with adequately fenced pools. Many of those homes were eventually bought by affluent gay men, both retirees and younger men in search of opportunity. Some of those men are nudists who treat their swimming pools as convenient places to entertain friends, meet new sex partners, or even make some money. Their mostly straight neighbors do not seem to mind if their guests do not make too much noise or park on their driveways.
It was not long before clothing-optional pool parties in private homes became as much a South Florida fixture as gay guest houses or bars on the Drive. Pool parties are not public: attendance is limited to those who meet the owners’ standards. They are by invitation only. Nor will you see reporters or photographers from the local media. Some party hosts do not even allow cell phone use on their premises. In some ways, nude pool parties are a throwback to pre-Stonewall days, where many of us go by with nicknames or first names only. Most of us do not want to be known as nudists, with all that it implies. Discretion is the key.
Even so, there are many gay or bisexual men in South Florida who are nudists or enjoy nude recreation. Though pool parties are private events, they are open to the public to a certain extent. News of a pool party or a welcoming host often spreads by word of mouth. Newbies might know a friend who has been to a party and would take them to the next one as their guest. They can also join Meetup groups, often created by party hosts to bring in new people and keep away undesirables. This also allows the hosts to charge a fee, which pays for the expenses and even allows them to contribute to charity.
Of course, most gay men are not nudists and would not be caught dead at a naked pool party. However, for those of us who enjoy that lifestyle, a nude pool party is the most fun we can have with our clothes off. For more information about nude pool parties, visit Meetup or hang out at your local pub or club. Sooner or later, you will meet someone who will tell you all about them.
