From Wilton Manors to Hicksville: The Times of Scot Rogers | Opinion

Scot Rogers is a South Florida-based businessman and author who began to write books after a career in advertising.

His series of novels, of which the first three are now available, was published by Rogers’ own Grateful Media and is available from Amazon.com at $18.99 each. Together, these books tell a continuing story and should be read in their proper order. They all feature Winston Clarke, which may or may not be based on the author.

“Welcome to the Shitshow” is the first volume in the series. It takes place in Fort Lauderdale and features the most outrageous gay pool party one would experience with our clothes on. The host is Marc Monarch, Winston’s friend, a filthy rich mogul with several businesses under his belt. “Welcome to the Shitshow” may be read as a satire of Wilton Manors gay society, with Monarch and his guests bearing more than a passing resemblance to people that we may know. Comedy turns into mystery into drama as we explore the demons that lurk beneath the surface of Monarch’s gay gathering. A reader will find it hard to put this book down.

Though “Welcome to the Shitshow” may stand on its own, it is but the prelude to a series featuring Winston Clarke’s wealthy family of Hicks and their homes in Hicksville, Indiana. In “My Family of Hicks,” the second in the series, Winston is taken back to Hicksville at the command of his obscenely wealthy Aunt Darci, who promptly drops dead and leaves Winston in charge to deal with all the mess. Soon the Hicks come out in full force, three dysfunctional generations of screwball relatives that require a chart for the reader to figure out what’s going on. (Fortunately, Rogers provide us with one.) Though I missed the gay Fort Lauderdale shenanigans that made “Welcome to the Shitshow” so memorable, I enjoyed reading about the Hicks in all their glory. Like its predecessor, “My Family of Hicks” makes an enjoyable read, with interesting characters and a surprise ending.

“My Family of Hicks: Tu” is the third volume in the Hicks series. It continues the saga of the Hicks family and Winston Clarke’s role as the newly assigned head of the family. Though I have not read “Tu” yet, I am told that it is “a thrilling and fiercely emotional saga of wealth, hidden generational secrets, scandal, and the inescapable bonds of family.” I look forward to reading “Tu,” and any other books that Scot Roger sees fit to deliver.
