The warm, humid air carried the scent of tropical blossoms as my husband, and I arrived at the newly reopened MAI-KAI in Fort Lauderdale. As soon as we stepped in, we knew that we were in for a real treat, and it made us nostalgic to know that we were back in a place that meant so much, and still means so much, to South Floridians and beyond.
A grand tiki sculpture greeted us at the entrance, as well as detailed carvings illuminated by flickering fire torches. We could tell that just like days of yore, the energy of the MAI-KAI is still there and has always been there, hidden away during its lengthy renovation. And was the fix worth it? The answer is yes.
While the restaurant keeps its energy and look, its polished and beautiful outside bar adds a nice touch, an inviting one that greets guests into the breezy patio so they can take in the décor and environment even more.
We could not go in for our 5 pm show without a trying out a cocktail during their happy hour, which ran from 4 to 7 p.m. The outdoor bar was full of activity and people’s chatter. The twinkling lights hung above, and the bar’s bamboo stools are as inviting as their signature cocktails.
While there, before our sinner and a show experience, I ordered their classic Mai Tai, which lived up to its reputation as one of the best drinks in the house. The blend of rum, lime, and orgeat syrup was both refreshing and decadent, a perfect prelude to the evening ahead. I am a big fan of Mai Tais, and this one was perfectly balanced and refreshing. You cannot come to the MAI-KAI and not have a signature drink from their extensive menu. Trust us on this, because this is a professionally curated menu by mixologists and bartenders that truly care about their craft.
After a nice drink, it was time for dinner. As the heavy wooden doors swung open, we found ourselves in awe. The space was a vibrant homage to Polynesian culture, with every detail thoughtfully curated to transport guests to a tropical paradise.
The sculptures, crafted to resemble ancient island deities, stood majestically in various corners of the room. Fire torches cast a warm glow, and the soft rustle of water from a nearby indoor waterfall added to the ambiance. The staff, dressed in colorful island attire, greeted us with bright smiles and a welcoming "Aloha!"
It was fun to get this energetic greeting as soon as we walked into the dimly lit room. We realized that every staff member greets you with a bright smile and you can tell that they want guests to have a memorable experience.
When the time came for the 5 p.m. event, we were led to a table that offered an excellent view of the stage. The setting felt almost magical, with its dim lighting and the flicker of torches creating a sense of intimacy. The menu was a feast of Polynesian-inspired dishes, each more tempting than the last.
To start, we recommend sharing the Pu Pu Platter, an assortment of delicacies like crispy spring rolls, tender ribs, and succulent shrimp skewers, each bite bursting with flavor. It was delicious and it gives you a chance to try different things, all at once. The menu is extensive, and it offers food for every discerning palate. You’ll have a tough time choosing your main course!
The lights dimmed further as the show began, and the room was suddenly alive We could tell that we were in for a real treat.
When the professional Polynesian dancers took the stage, their movements a mesmerizing blend of strength and grace. They wore vibrant costumes adorned with feathers and shells, their performances telling stories of love, adventure, and tradition. The fire dancers are also impressive, as they skillfully twirled flaming torches, the heat palpable even from our seats. It was a spectacle unlike anything we’d ever seen, and we found ourselves completely immersed in the performance.
There was a moment where I really found myself as part of the action. I was pulled onstage to be a part of a traditional and fun Polynesian dance, and of course my husband had to take videos and pictures. It was truly one of the most fun moments that I had that night, and it proves that everyone wants you to be a part of the experience, including the dancers. I got into it, thanks to the rhythm of the drums and because they made me feel right at home and cheered me on. Even if my dance was not necessarily perfect, I felt as if I was a part of the action during that moment.
When you leave, please walk around the tropical garden Filled with lush greenery and even more twinkling lights strung above, it’s a perfect place to stop hidden artistic treasures and the carved statues are impressive. It comes to life at night, and it’s the perfect goodnight picture spot.
The four-year restoration has preserved the spot’s historical charm while infusing it with fresh energy. The MAI-KAI’s reopening is a celebration of culture, community, and the beauty of culture and the tropics. For anyone seeking an escape, even if just for a few hours, this iconic restaurant and lounge is a must-visit.
Let’s just say I’ll be back soon. Maybe for a second round of Mai Tais and another show. Why not?
