Jason Collins represented something far greater than basketball. He represented courage, authenticity, and the freedom to finally live your truth in a world that for so long made so many of us feel we had to hide parts of ourselves to survive.
Born in California, Jason built an extraordinary basketball career through discipline, intelligence, and perseverance. He starred collegiately at Stanford University alongside his twin brother, Jarron Collins, becoming one of the nation’s most respected student-athletes. At Stanford, Jason helped lead the Cardinal to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and a Final Four run in 1998, earning a reputation as a tough, selfless, defensive-minded leader.
In 2001, Jason was selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets before beginning a successful 13-year NBA career. Throughout his professional journey, he played for several organizations including the New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, and Brooklyn Nets. He appeared in back-to-back NBA Finals with the Nets in 2002 and 2003 and earned tremendous respect throughout the league for his professionalism, leadership, and team-first mentality.
Yet Jason greatest impact would ultimately transcend basketball.
As a former professional athlete myself, I understood the silent pressure that existed in sports for decades — the fear that being openly gay could somehow change the way teammates, fans, sponsors, or the public viewed you. When Jason became the first openly gay active NBA player in 2013, it was not just a historic sports moment. It was a cultural moment that gave strength and hope to countless people, including me.
In my 2014 book, “Hiding Inside the Baseline,” I shared my own journey and struggles with identity, fear, and acceptance as a professional tennis player. Seeing Jason step forward publicly a year earlier reminded me why stories matter. Visibility matters. Truth matters. My book started with the courage of Jason who inspired me to share my journey.
