A Hero Among Us: A Community Rallies for a Lifesaving Gift | Opinion

It isn’t often that we witness an act of courage and compassion so profound that it changes not only one life but an entire community.

Yet, right here in our midst, a young man has stepped forward to do something extraordinary — he is donating one of his kidneys to our beloved friend, Kitty Keiser. This selfless act isn’t just a gift of life for Keiser, but a testament to the boundless humanity that still thrives in our world.

Keiser is a cherished member of our community — always smiling, always supporting others, and now, she needs us more than ever. When news spread that she needed a lifesaving kidney transplant, hope flickered as friends and loved ones wondered if a match would be found in time. Then came this brave young man, who quietly offered what most of us could never imagine giving — a part of himself.

This hero has asked for no recognition, no spotlight, no fanfare — but we know that such a gift deserves more than silent gratitude. It deserves action. That’s why Rick Leonard, entertainment director from Tropics Grille, felt so compelled to step up and organize a benefit worthy of this incredible act of love and bravery. Leonard wanted to help ease any burden for this donor, who will undoubtedly face weeks away from work while he recovers from surgery. The least we can do as a community to ensure he has one less thing to worry about during his convalescence.

On July 20, Tropics Grille will host the Hero Benefit, an elegant evening of good food, great company, and unforgettable entertainment. Guests will enjoy a three-course dinner and an inspiring show for $69.99, with every dollar going directly to support our donor. An amazing lineup of local performers has come together, all donating their time and talent free of charge to make this night truly special. Expect to be moved by the voices of Rick Leonard, Miss Bouvée, Jeff Neil of the Synergy Twins, Lenora Jaye, Victor Valdez, Mailyn Soulfree, Dre Acevedo, and Jennifer McClain. Plus, Marcos Aycox, the Tatted Violinist, will grace the stage with his breathtaking music.

Hosting the evening will be Marc Martorana, whose passion for this cause reflects the spirit we hope to share with everyone who attends.

It’s our chance as a unified community to stand behind a hero who chose to save a life, and to show Keiser that her community stands beside her every step of the way.

I invite you all to come out, break bread, and be part of something bigger than ourselves. Let’s fill the room with love, music, laughter, and hope. Let’s make sure that when one hero gives, the rest of us stand ready to give back.
