We caught up with producer and South Florida Drag Icon Nicole Halliwell for a quick chat about the event.
What inspired you to bring these incredible guests together?
I wanted to go above and beyond the “tribute show” and give fans a chance to experience something new from the sitcom they love so much. Nobody can recount the stories like the people who lived it every day, so I took the chance in bringing them to South Florida so fans can interact face to face and dive much deeper than any TV special, or magazine article could.
You call this a “once in a lifetime experience.”
It truly is! It’s so rare to have these amazing creatives all together in one place like this, and how incredible after 40 years (40 YEARS!), they’re still so engaged with fans and still love to share their stories. In addition to that, they’re all from the other side of the country – so bringing them together to South Florida where the show was based is truly unique, and may never happen again!
Tell us how the tribute show came to be?
I grew up on the Golden Girls, and spent over a decade building parody shows for so many other iconic pop culture favorites (Hocus Pocus, Mean Girls, Death Becomes Her, etc), so it just felt right that this would be the next endeavor. I spent years playing “Blanche” in local shows alone. During casting for the rest of the girls in 2023, the universe introduced me to these amazing performers in such a prolific way where all the pieces just fell into place, there was no denying this was it. Our very first appearance was at the Official Hulu/ABC Golden Girls kitchen in Miami, and 35 consecutive sold out shows later – the rest is history!

Yes! In my opinion, he wrote the most comprehensive book about the series, so given his knowledge, he’s the right person for the job. “Golden Girls Forever” (New York Times Best-Seller), is a detailed deep-dive behind the scenes with cast, creators, and crew looking at the show’s cultural impact, as well as the way it handled such serious topics like aging, HIV, homelessness, and LGBTQ stories. It’s a thrilling retrospective into the show and it’s timelessness. Barnes and Noble will be on-site with us, so you can grab a copy of Jim’s book to be signed!
