The Adrienne Arsht launches its new Broadway in Miami series with the South Florida premiere of “Some Like It Hot” from Dec. 3-8.
Set in Chicago, where Prohibition has everyone thirsty for a little excitement, the story, based on the film of the same name, is about two musicians forced to flee the Windy City after witnessing a mob hit. With gangsters hot on their heels, they go undercover as women in an “all-girl” band, for a life-chasing, life-changing trip of a lifetime. A previous adaptation, “Sugar,” was not a success. In this version, the men make some stunning revelations about themselves. Updating the story and bringing in more depth than the farce the movie was, the musical won more theater awards than any show in its season and was named Best Musical by the Drama Desk, The Drama League, and the Outer Critics Circle.
Tickets to “Some Like It Hot” are $30-$135 and available at arshtcenter.org and 305-949-6722.
Sex In the City
Plays Of Wilton has opened the world premiere of “PrEP’d,” the story of a sexually frustrated gay man named Jerry who was traumatized as a young man by living through the AIDS crisis and now finds himself in a new world where everyone is on PrEP and barebacking is rampant. He dreams of going on PrEP and having unprotected sex with lots and lots of strangers like he did as a young man, but he doesn’t trust the science of PrEP and as every day passes by, he feels more and more like a dinosaur. Like most Larsen productions, it features men in various stages of undress. The play runs at The Foundry through Nov. 24.
M&M - You’ll Melt in Her Hands
The West End Lounge's Broadway/Cabaret series continues with the talented Marieann Meringolo on Nov. 13. Meringolo has performed at some of New York’s top venues including Feinstein’s, 54 Below, and Lincoln Center. Having never heard this singer, I Googled her name, and I’ve got to say I was blown away, not only by her voice – it’s been a long time since I’ve heard someone with such power and control and able to act out a song, but the fact that she keeps her pronouns firmly female oriented. Her version of “Fifty Percent” is just devastating. Do yourself a favor, listen to a few videos online, and then buy a ticket for her show at West End. You’ll discover why Time Out New York declared, “If k.d. lang’s DNA were to get whipped together with Barbra Streisand’s…the result might well be Marieann Meringolo.”
