There are certain Broadway shows that entertain you for a few hours, and then there are the ones that quietly stay with you long after the curtain falls.

Last night, seeing "The Notebook" at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts with my bestie Sharma was absolutely one of those experiences.

Based on the beloved Nicholas Sparks story, the musical has officially arrived in Miami as part of the Broadway in Miami season, and somehow, it feels even more emotional live on stage.

From the very first moments, the production pulls you into this sweeping and deeply human love story. The performances were stunning across the board, especially because the musical explores love through different stages of life rather than focusing only on young romance. That choice gives the story so much depth and emotional weight. You are not simply watching a couple fall in love, but you are watching memories, heartbreak, hope, aging, and devotion unfold in real time.

The music was beautiful in that understated Broadway way where the songs don’t overpower the story but instead become part of the emotions themselves. Several moments felt almost cinematic, helped by dreamy lighting and elegant staging that transformed the theater into rainstorms, quiet porches, lakeside memories, and intimate conversations. There were scenes where the audience became completely silent, the kind of silence that only happens when everyone is emotionally locked into what’s happening onstage.

Sharma and I kept exchanging those looks during certain songs and scenes, the kind where you don’t even need to say anything because you both know the moment is hitting hard. And yes, tissues were needed. But what I appreciated most about The Notebook was that it never felt manipulative or overly dramatic. Instead, it felt sincere. Honest. Tender.

In a theater landscape filled with spectacle-heavy productions, this musical succeeds because it leans fully into storytelling and emotional connection.

Walking out into downtown Miami afterward, still talking about our favorite scenes and emotional moments, it reminded me why Broadway nights with people you love become memories all on their own. The Notebook is romantic, nostalgic, heartbreaking, and hopeful all at once, and a reminder that some stories endure for a reason, and that love, even though time and change, can leave a permanent mark on us.

Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts is located at 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, Florida. The Notebook plays from May 5th through May 10th at the Ziff Ballet Opera House. For tickets and showtimes, visit https://www.arshtcenter.org or call 305-949-6722.
