Lesbian Thespians presents “Not So Grimm Fairy Tales” on Friday, Sept. 11, Sunday, Sept. 13, and Saturday, Sept. 19 at Gray Box Theater. Five classic fairy tales are retold from a funny and distinctly woman’s point of view.

Among the short plays are: “Snow White and the Anti-Freeze,” “Little Red and the Big Bad She-Wolf,” “Bumble Stiltskin and the Baby Business,” and “Jack and the Marijuana Stalk.”

The Chic and Unique Ball will be here before you know it! On Saturday, Oct. 24, the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida will transform the Hard Rock Hotel into a jungle-inspired celebration. This is the chorus’ big gala and fundraiser, and this year's theme is Wild Elegance. Dress daringly and arrive glamorously. The night begins at 6:30 p.m. with red-carpet arrivals, open-bar cocktails, and a curated silent auction. VIP guests receive early access at 6 p.m. for an exclusive reception and auction. That’s followed by an elegant dinner and a live auction led by Whitney J. Dutton. There will also be a performance from Artistic Director Gabe Salazar and special guests, The Synergy Twins.

Often home to outside productions, The Center for Spiritual Living on Dixie is now also a performing arts company. Its first season calendar is ambitious. First up is an Aretha Franklin Tribute concert, Oct. 9 and 10, with the J Blue Band, featuring powerhouse vocalist Cristina Gilbert, bringing the unforgettable music of Aretha Franklin to life. Then the play, “The Velocity of Autumn,” running Nov. 5–8. The play centers on Alexandra, an 80yearold artist, whose fierce independence collides with her children’s wellintentioned but misguided attempts to control her future. A New Year’s Day concert with Karen Drucker follows. The season winds up with an updated version of the hit Broadway play, “Baby 2021,” from March 12–21. The updated script examines the journey to parenthood—from morning sickness to hormone injections to existential angst.

Kudos to Island City Stage. Its upcoming production of “Paper Cut” by Andrew Rossendorf, a dramatic look at the emotional toll of war, requires an actor with an authentic disability. ICS has launched a nationwide search for a performer with lower limb amputation (left, right, or bilateral). The show will run March 11 – Apr. 4, 2027.

BITES

Ophelia, a popular Coconut Grove bakery and café concept, is opening a location in Huizenga Park this fall. Ophelia is bringing its scratch-made pastries, specialty coffee program, and chef-driven breakfast and lunch menu. The new venue joins Mr. Smash Burger, with Sweetwater’s set to open later this year.

National Dog Day is Aug. 26, and four-legged foodies deserve more than just a belly rub…they deserve a seat at the table. To help, I’ve rounded up some of South Florida’s best pet-friendly restaurants where pups can dine just as well as their humans. From doggie sushi and chef-prepared dog menus to waterfront patios and stylish cafés, here are some restaurants SoFlo tails are wagging for this summer:

Casa Sensei, the Pan-Asian, Latin fusion eatery, offers guests and their furry friends an unforgettable dining experience on the restaurant’s outdoor waterfront dock. A dog-friendly menu includes “doggie sushi,” hand-rolled bites made exclusively for four-legged patrons (the popular Woof Roll features beef, rice, carrots, and peas rolled in soy paper).

Shooters Waterfront always welcomes pooches on the waterfront patio. While you enjoy your coastal-inspired cuisine, treat your pup to something special from Shooters’ dog menu, which features wholesome meals like the Ocean Reef Turkey, Bahia Beef and Boca Chica Chicken.
