We should be grateful for the abundance of film festivals in the area.

When the Fort Lauderdale Film Festival and Miami Festival realized they were competing for limited resources, they decided to merge and became OutShine Film Festival, which not only screens in both cities but offers two festivals, spring and fall, plus an at-home streaming option. The fall festival opens in Fort Lauderdale on Oct. 16 with Richard Linklater’s haunting, queer-inflected chamber drama, “Blue Moon,” set in 1943, and starring Ethan Hawke. The closing night, screening of “Jimpa,” starring Olivia Colman as Hannah, who travels to Amsterdam with her nonbinary teen, Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde), to visit their estranged father, Jim (John Lithgow), a vibrant, openly gay man navigating life and love in his later years. When Frances expresses a desire to stay with Jim for a year, Hannah must confront her own beliefs about parenting, family, and identity. An after-party concludes the Fort Lauderdale portion festival; the Miami portion starts next week. For more information, and the full schedule, go to outshinefilm.com.
