ArtBuzz Theatrics is going back and recreating the 1998 production of “Cabaret,” opening at Empire Stage on June 12 and running through June 28.
This production is known for its edgy, immersive style and striking contrast between the glitzy nightclub numbers and the sobering political realities outside its doors. The result is a theatrical experience that is as entertaining as it is unsettling, leaving an impression on audiences with its powerful themes and unforgettable score. Community favorite Larry Buzzeo directs and plays the emcee. Tickets are $45 ($38 with the code EARLY). For tickets, call 954-678-1496 or go to EmpireStage.com.
Switch Hitter
Island City Stage’s next production examines a world few plays have explored before: what it’s like to be gay and autistic. “Light Switch” runs through June 14 and focuses on Henry Sullivan, a young, gay man with autism, who is completely enchanted by the sweeping romance of 19th-century British novels. But nothing in those pages prepared him for the complexities of modern dating. When Henry meets Joseph, he begins a journey through love, heartbreak, identity, and acceptance while navigating a world that doesn’t always understand him, while learning to write his own kind of love story. Family Drama
Not every family is what it seems. Slow Burn Theatre tears back the curtain with one of Broadway’s most fearless musicals, Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill.” The two-time Tony Award-winning production runs Saturday, June 13-28, at the Amaturo Theatre at The Broward Center. The Healys appear to be a picture-perfect suburban family but looks can be deceiving. When the cracks beneath the surface begin to show, they must choose between maintaining the status quo or facing harsh truths about themselves, their community, and the world around them. Set to an explosive score of Morissette’s most iconic songs including “Ironic,” “You Oughta Know,” “Hand in My Pocket,” and “All I Really Want.” For tickets, go to SlowBurnTheatre.org or BrowardCenter.org.
Dinner and a Show
Brévo Theatre celebrates the strength, love, and resilience of women with its production of “The Color Purple!,” directed by Bryan Keyth Wilson and choreographed by TM Pride. The show runs June 20-28 at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. Tickets are $55-$75; the $75 VIP ticket includes reserved cabaret table seating and a signature cocktail served in a commemorative Mason jar. Brévo has paired up with some local businesses to provide enhanced experiences, such as “Brunch & Blues at Harpo’s,” in partnership with Just Spoons Café, which includes a Southern-inspired brunch paired with gospel and blues, before the show on June 27 at 1 p.m. Tickets for the event are $130-$150.
The brunch event supports Brévo Theatre’s Artist Fund Campaign. On June 21 and 28, “Celie’s Sunday Spread,” hosted by Wayne & Lucretia Weiner, follows matinee performances with an intimate post-show dinner experience with the cast and creative team.
