Winner of the 2024 Golden Globe for “Best Motion Picture, Animated,” along with numerous other awards, Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” (GKIDS/Studio Ghibli) is the one to beat at this year’s Oscars. At least 30 minutes too long and deserving of its PG13 rating (not meant for young children!), “The Boy and the Heron” is, nevertheless, another unforgettable cinematic experience from writer/director Miyazaki.
Most large and medium cities have maybe one or two queer theaters. We are extremely lucky that Wilton Manors/Fort Lauderdale has four LGBTQ-centric companies producing regularly. Of course, there’s Island City Stage, Wilton Manors’ premier LGBT-focused theater company, now in its 12th season. Then there’s Ronnie Larsen’s Plays of Wilton at The Foundry, and Lesbian Thespians an itinerant performing arts group founded and led by women and dedicated to diversity and innovative art. While not LGBT-identified, Empire Stage is home to several companies producing LGBT-themed shows, including Larry Buzzeo’s ArtBuzz Theatrics.

While he continued to work consistently, in gay and mainstream, independent and big budget features, and on TV, perhaps his most unforgettable role turned out to be Huck on the popular ABC series “Scandal” starring Kerry Washington.
