Men Who Dance returns to the Amaturo stage for its fifth consecutive year on Saturday, Nov. 30, and Sunday, Dec. 1.
To celebrate the milestone, an exciting line-up of dancers from around the globe, including past audience favorites, return in an explosive physical display of artistic expression meant to celebrate, challenge, deconstruct, and defy tired concepts and notions of “masculinity.” Men Who Dance grew from 15 dancers representing 18 countries, to 50+ dancers representing 25 countries, making it the largest all male dance festival in the United States. The company is poised to make history again as it continues to grow as a global platform for thought-provoking yet entertaining expressions of our constitutional freedoms.
Against the backdrop of exceptional displays of bravura and thought-provoking choreographies, local, national, and international dance companies and individual artists will present an exhilarating repertoire of myriad themes and genres. Tickets for Men Who Dance are $25 to $45 and are available at the Broward Center for Performing Arts, call 954-462-0222 or go to browardcenter.org.
Cher and Cher Alike
A brand-new production of the Tony Award-winning musical “The Cher Show” comes to The Broward Center for eight performances Nov. 19-24. Imagine 35 smash hits, six decades of stardom, two rock-star husbands, a Grammy, an Oscar, an Emmy, and enough Tony Award-winning Bob Mackie gowns to cause a sequin shortage in New York City, all in one unabashedly fabulous new musical. Does it get any gayer? Ticket prices range from $39 to $140 and are available at BrowardCenter.org, ticketmaster.com, or by calling 954-468-0222.
Bear and Bear Alike
Get ready to raise your voice and sing your heart out at the community show tune sing-along hosted by the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida and The Bears of South Florida at Hunters on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 3 to 5 p.m. (doors open at 2:30 p.m.).
Whether you're a seasoned singer or just love belting out your favorite tunes (off-key, like me!), this event is for everyone. Tickets are available now for just $10 if you prepay, or $15 at the door. Don't miss out on the chance to be part of this joyous gathering – it's sure to be an afternoon to remember!
If you’d rather watch, join the chorus on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. for “SHOUT!,” for an unforgettable evening of cabaret at The West End Lounge. Proceeds from “SHOUT!” will directly support scholarships for talented singers who are enthusiastic about singing but financial hardships may prevent them from joining the chorus. Tickets for both events are available at gmcsf.org.
Dress For Success
Based on the book by Ilene Beckerman, Nora and Delia Ephron’s award-winning ensemble piece about women, clothes, and memory, “Love, Loss, and What I Wore” will be the first production presented by The Pompano Players, the brand-new Pompano Beach Cultural Center resident theatre company.
The play will run from Oct. 11-20. “It is a story of women’s roles and the clothes chosen to represent the changes and challenges of every woman,” says the production’s director Jeremy Quinn. “It is, at heart, about being a woman, and the bonds made between women through shared experiences. The show encapsulates these moments and uses them to explore what it means to be a mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, girlfriend, and wife. It’s an opportunity to honor my own mother and grandmother, who made their own clothes.”
Tickets range in price from $45 to $65 and are available at pompanobeachculturalcenter.com.
