A fresh survey in the race for Wilton Manors Mayor has changed, but essentially remains the same as OutSFL’s August survey.
The results show incumbent Scott Newton with 51%. Challengers Mike Sansevero’s is at 24% while Mark Beigay is at 5%. However, 20% remain undecided.
These numbers have barely moved since the last survey in early August where Newton stood at 56%, Sansevero at 23%, and Beigay at 2% with 18% undecided.
While Newton enjoys strong support from his allies, there are some critics out there.
“I’m disappointed with our representatives these past few years,” one commenter wrote.
Despite being a vocal ally for Wilton Manors’ LGBTQ community, one person wants an actual queer mayor. “As a 57-year-old gay male entrepreneur who does business in Wilton Manors, I think it is important to have a mayor who understands — by lived experience — what it’s like to be, and grow up gay in America.”
Some pointed out that Newton’s challengers are inexperienced in elective office. “Neither of Newton’s opponents have experience being on the commission. That should be first."
Beigay got some support, with one person writing, “Mark is very personable and professional. He cares about Wilton Manors deeply and will do an excellent job serving the people of Wilton Manors.”
One concern appears to be the feeling that the city is stagnant. The lack of new projects, for business or residential, could be a problem in the future that will impact the city’s budget.
The election is Nov. 5.
