Wilton Drive at 6th Ave. is one of the most heavily traveled areas in the city. Over the weekend, a dangerous situation was stopped before it could spread.
The bus stop in front of Club Extra and the patio area was engulfed in flames. Video on social media shows it raging out of control. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue was called, and they were able to put out the flames. No one was hurt.
Now arson investigators are working to figure out how the fire started and if it was intentional.
Thousands of pedestrians and vehicles pass through that intersection every day. Now they see a bus bench and shelter destroyed at one end, where metal and other materials were clearly melted by the fire.
As of Wednesday morning, the entire bus stop and surrounding area was cordoned off for public safety.
