Island City Stage caps off its season with a new show. “At the Wedding” by Bryna Turner is a pleasant comedy about Carlo attending her ex’s wedding (to a man!) and along the way we get to meet all sorts of characters from the wedding; the bridesmaid who always hated Carlo, a slightly tipsy guest who plans on asking his beloved to marry him at the reception, another wedding guest who keeps hitting on Carlo, and the mother of the bride, who wishes her daughter was marrying Carlo.

It takes too long for us to get to see Carlo and her ex, Eva, together, but when we do, the two actors Hannah Benitez as Carlo and Sheena O. Murray as Eva, have real chemistry (although I was distracted by how dirty the wedding dress was—given that every other aspect of the sets and costume were spot on this lapse was all the more notable).

Director Andy Rogow keeps the pace moving, and the set changes are accomplished beautifully with actual dance music you’d hear at a typical wedding reception and choreographed by Greg Schuh. A special shout-out must be given to Steven Guez, who, in the role of the cater-waiter, has few lines, but can say volumes with a raised eyebrow or a frown, and is a darn good dancer, too. Make certain to RSVP for this wedding.
