TransEd, a nonprofit organization founded in 2023, is making waves in South Florida by equipping transgender and nonbinary young adults with the resources they need to succeed academically and personally. From housing and transportation to tutoring and mentorship, TransEd is removing barriers that often stand in the way of education.
The organization’s cornerstone program provides weekly one-on-one tutoring and bi-monthly peer mentorship sessions. Students currently enrolled are guided through the GED certification process, receiving instruction in subjects such as science, social studies, and math, among others. Sponsorships and donations help the nonprofit provide students with new computers, books, school supplies, and GED exam fees.
But TransEd’s support doesn’t stop at test prep. The nonprofit also awards annual scholarships to transgender and nonbinary individuals ages 18 to 34 pursuing higher education — from trade certifications to doctoral degrees.
This year marks the 2nd Annual TransEd Scholarship Awards, which will distribute four scholarships totaling $12,500.
Originally due May 31, the application deadline has been extended to June 25 to ensure more students have the opportunity to apply.
“We’re extending the deadline to June 25 so that additional applicants have time to apply,” said TransEd Founder and Executive Director Franchesca D’Amore in a statement.
Applicants are asked to describe their goals, achievements, leadership experience, and what makes them a strong candidate. A short video — no longer than two minutes — is also required to give applicants a chance to personally share their story.
“We’re also asking for a short video so applicants can share who they are and what their dreams are,” said D’Amore.
