Duni Bauta sees travel as more than movement between destinations. At its best, it can become an education in respect, difference and human connection.
Bauta, 46, is a gay Fort Lauderdale resident who works to create engaging and meaningful connections with the local gay community. Professionally, he strives to design experiences that combine luxury with authenticity and reflect a responsibility to the guests he serves.
“My identity have created a sense of belonging to a community that is resilient and supportive of each other,” Bauta said.
That sense of belonging also informs his civic work. Bauta chairs the SunServe Gala and has served for two consecutive years as a presenting sponsor of the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. He supports Equality Florida, the Human Rights Campaign and the Fort Lauderdale chapter of the Gamma Mu Foundation. He is also an active member of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association.
For Bauta, being out and proud means reaffirming a commitment to the people whose advocacy secured the rights LGBTQ people exercise today. Pride, in that sense, is not merely celebration. It is a responsibility to remember a legacy and continue it.
His advice to LGBTQ youth begins with persistence, particularly during a political moment that can make progress feel fragile.
“First of all don’t give up, while current times may seem uncertain, the path is certainly greener than it used to be and we are all on this together,” Bauta said. “While sometimes it seems like there isn’t much hope, the truth is that we are not for fighting not for quitting.”
Bauta’s personal motto is simple: “ kindness is always the answer” That emphasis on kindness carries into his passion for exploring the world. He believes encountering other cultures and forms of diversity can challenge assumptions and expand a person’s capacity for respect.
“Never stop exploring. Exposure to other cultures and diversity is the best education we can give to ourselves,” he said. “I believe in the power of respect and appreciation for others.”
Through hospitality, philanthropy and LGBTQ community involvement, Bauta brings those ideas home to South Florida. His work is grounded in the belief that meaningful experiences are not defined only by where people go, but by how welcomed, understood and connected they feel when they arrive.
