The other night, I caught a Lyft from Pompano to Wilton Manors. Almost immediately, the driver exclaimed, “Oh my God, I just kicked a guy out for being mean to me and telling me everything I believe is wrong!”
I thought I was in for a ride where I could commiserate with another liberal about the state of our nation.
I was wrong. I assumed because my driver was female, she’d be left-leaning. Nope.
She was hardcore MAGA.
Living in my liberal bubble, I take pride in never interacting with the MAGA movement, but here I was.
“People can’t afford to buy groceries,” she said.
She couldn’t provide any examples.
I explained that the U.S. has the world’s number one economy, and the stock market keeps breaking records.
She then said, “San Francisco, Chicago, New York City are hellholes where people are raped and murdered in broad daylight.”
Having just moved here from New York City last year, I assured her that’s not true.
But she wasn’t done. “Fifteen people were shot in Chicago.”
I volunteer with Gun Violence Prevention groups like Gays Against Guns. I mentioned how Biden passed the first significant gun control bill in 30 years, and we try to get more legislation passed.
Her response? “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. We don’t need gun control.”
