Steven Arnst has lost his reelection bid for city commissioner in Oakland Park. The city was electing two commissioners and Arnst finished fourth of four candidates, just three votes behind David Anderson.

Chris Fischer won election alongside the reelection of Tim Lonergan. Fischer outpaced Arnst and Anderson by more than 1,500 votes. Lonergan got the most votes, with nearly 6,000 votes.

Arnst is the current mayor, but Oakland Park’s mayoralship rotates among commissioners.

The main issue in Oakland Park this year is voter anger over the city’s transparency with residents. A sidewalk project, in the works since 2018, was essentially hidden from them until it was too late to stop the work. Now people are upset over a proposal to buy CareerSource on West Oakland Park Blvd. They say the city was far along in the process before telling residents of the idea.

Broward County will certify the results Nov. 16. As of press time, the city was expected to hold a lame duck meeting on Nov. 4.
