Federal Lawsuit Seeks To Block Anti-LGBTQ Law
According to the Associated Press, the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa and Lambda Legal are representing several families who are suing to block a new Iowa law that restricts teachers from discussing LGBTQ issues and removes books depicting sex acts from school libraries, excluding religious texts.
The organizations announced the federal legal action on Nov. 28. They filed the lawsuit on behalf of Iowa Safe Schools, a group supporting LGBTQ+ youth, alongside seven Iowa students and their families.
“The First Amendment does not allow our state or our schools to remove books or issue blanket bans on discussion and materials simply because a group of politicians or parents find them offensive,” ACLU attorney Thomas Story told the AP.

Seattle middle school students mailed handmade cards to Moms for Liberty, a conservative organization founded in Florida that has expanded its reach nationwide, according to FOX 13 Seattle.
The letters featured rainbows, peace signs, hearts, and phrases such as “Gay is slay” and “Stop bullying and excluding LGBTQ+ youth and families.”
Seattle Public Schools stated that these letters were not part of the official curriculum and were sent last spring.
"Seattle Public Schools is dedicated to fostering welcoming, inclusive, and identity-safe environments for all our students," the school district said in a statement. “We firmly uphold the rights of our students, staff, and families to express their authentic selves. We take great pride in our unwavering support for LGBTQIA+ students, staff, and families, which is reflected in our policies and everyday practices."
