On the opening day of the 2024 Republican National Convention, gay conservatives celebrated the removal of anti-LGBT language from the party’s platform.
References to traditional marriage defined as one man and one woman were stricken from the platform, and no mention of overturning the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges could be found.
“Log Cabin Republicans have been working for decades to help build a more inclusive GOP and update the platform’s outdated and out-of-step language …Today, that hard work has finally come to fruition,” said Log Cabin Republicans President Charles Moran.
By not condemning or affirming gay marriage, the RNC is leaving the issue up for its members to decide individually. The platform’s approval, Moran said, sends a clear message that the Republican Party is open to all.
“The platform sends a powerful message to LGBT conservatives across the country that we are not only welcome, but a part of the movement to Make America Great Again,” Moran said.
U.S. Congressman Robert Garcia, a gay Democrat from California, told the Washington Blade that the platform is reactionary and does not support diverse communities.
Monday’s proceedings in Milwaukee came just two days after former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania.
Trump appeared at the convention with a bandage over his right ear, which was grazed by a bullet fired by the lone gunman.
