In a time when cynicism is on the rise and faiths focus on differences rather than common ground, one gathering looks to build a bridge. The third annual Breaking Bread, Breaking Bias interfaith service brings together people of different beliefs and perspectives.

Happening this Sunday, Nov. 16 at 11:15 a.m. at Unity On the Bay in Miami, the event welcomes members of the Islamic, Jewish, Unitarian Universalist, Krsna Consciousness, and New Thought and Unity leaders.

“The goal is simple yet profound,” Rev. Juan del Hierro, Unity Senior Minister said. “To build bridges of understanding and love among people of different faiths and traditions. In a world too often divided by fear and misunderstanding, we come together to affirm that our shared humanity is greater than that which may separate us.”

Religion has always been used as a bludgeon to control citizens and that seems as true today as ever, especially for LGBTQ people. But Rev. del Hierro says spirituality can still have a place in our community.

“When religion is used to wound, gatherings like this become acts of sacred resistance and empowerment, affirming that spirit belongs to everyone. For LGBTQ+ people, interfaith connection sends the healing message that "you are seen, you are sacred, and your light is part of the divine whole."

In the most hostile climate towards LGBTQ people in decades, Rev. del Hierro says this event is more important than ever.

“Especially during this climate where so many people are being ‘othered’ and hurt is taking place, it is important to offer belonging, lean on spiritual teachings that free people from fear and shame and people are empowered to live their faith through service and social action.”

“Our interfaith service isn’t just an event, it’s a sacred invitation to co-create the world where everyone is free to live, love and celebrate without fear. It is about creating the energy that uplifts all.”

Breaking Bread, Breaking Bias is Sunday, Nov. 16, at 11:15 a.m. at Unity on the Bay, 137 NE 19th Street, Miami.
