On a day meant to honor U.S. presidents, more than 50 people gathered outside Wilton Manors City Hall and Police Department on Presidents’ Day to protest the nation’s current one: Donald Trump.
Monday’s demonstration had no official organizers, yet it felt coordinated and purposeful.
Attendees told OutSFL they came to voice their frustration over policies they view as harmful to the transgender people, women, and marginalized communities.
“We’re out here for selfish reasons,” Lori Kent said. “We’re hoping to be models for other people.”
The protest reflected a spontaneous, grassroots energy. Many participants said they saw posts on Facebook about the gathering and invited friends to join them.
Unlike many political events in South Florida, which are often led by familiar activists, this protest drew a mix of new faces.
That shift could indicate broader voter engagement — particularly among those who don’t typically attend rallies or organize movements.
While its long-term impact remains unclear, the presence of fresh voices could signal growing political momentum ahead of Florida’s key races in 2026, including a U.S. Senate seat and several competitive congressional and state legislative contests.
