It’s been a year and a half since Norm Kent died. His commitment to the LGBTQ community through his legal work, publications, and ornery attitude created a legacy that carries on today.
Before he died, Wilton Manors Business Association created the Norm Kent Lifetime Business Achievement Award, with Kent being the first recipient.
At WMBA’s awards and recognition ceremony at Hunters on Monday, Oct. 14 at 5 p.m., the award will be presented for the first time since Kent’s death. The recipient will be Glen Weinzimer.
Weinzimer created The SMART Ride, and over 20 years the ride raised more than $16 million. Every dollar raised went to Florida organizations that work with the HIV/AIDS community. Last year was the final SMART Ride.
“It’s great that a year after we did our final SMART Ride, the work we did for 20 years is still being recognized for its impact on the HIV community,” Weinzimer said.
In addition to his non-profit work, Weinzimer also is co-owner of Bona Italian restaurant. They hold “Give Back Monday” each week, and donate 10% of the night’s sales to various local non-profits.
“We are so appreciative of the recognition that we are receiving from WMBA for Bona Italian’s community support. We believe that partnering with organizations that protect not just LGBTQ+ but the things we care about that are not just LGBTQ focused like caring for pets, mental health, school safety for all,” Weinzimer said.
WMBA President Ron Falk said that, unlike other awards and recognitions they present, the Norm Kent award will only be given to a person, not a business.
“It’s going to be for somebody who reaches that pinnacle,” Falk said. “Someone who has given their life to the community. Someone who’s not only successful in the business community, but someone who has given their career to the community.”
Kent was a noted criminal defense attorney, a marijuana legalization advocate and longtime publisher of LGBTQ news in South Florida. Before co-founding South Florida Gay News, he owned the Express Gay News.
Tickets for the event are still available, starting at $15 for general admission and $80 for VIP.
