Museum of Discovery and Science Celebrates Pride

At a time when the definitions of “family” and “inclusiveness” are once again being assaulted, Fort Lauderdale’s most family friendly attraction is leaving no doubt that it stands with all families.

The Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) held its fifth annual Pride Day June 24.

All families were celebrated. MODS made a point to make Pride accessible and tangible to kids of all ages. Moms, dads, and kids marched in a special Pride Parade that weaved its way through the museum’s bright, colorful exhibits.

Preschoolers were able to dance to music while bubbles filled the air. Older kids learned in the Rainbow Science Lab and made Pride flags and tie-dyed shirts.

SunServe, whose Youth & Family Services division works with LGBT youth, had one of the most popular, and possibly messiest, exhibits of the day. They created a community art piece titled, “Everyone Is Welcome Here.” All guests could use paint, finger paint, gloves and handprints to leave a lasting impression on the community.

Rian Merrick and Michelle Santos are Senior Therapists with SunServe’s youth, and collaborated on the artistic concept.

“Our project was all about unifying the community through a collaborative piece of artwork,” Santos said. “Folks were free to express themselves in any way they felt comfortable and to take up space in their own unique way. It was beautiful to see the art come together and watch the community share freely in something creative. Visibility is so vital, and it was amazing to watch the community take pride in who they are.”
