A man has been arrested and charged with murder following a fatal shooting April 27 in North Carolina, according to the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a press release, deputies arrived at the scene and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim, identified as Dilan Hebert, was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

Hebert had ties to South Florida’s LGBTQ community. He was close to the late Norm Kent, co-founder of South Florida Gay News, and previously did some work for the publication.

Detectives launched an investigation and identified the suspect as Thomas Makiel Flood. Warrants were obtained charging Flood with first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and discharging a firearm within a dwelling.

Flood was taken into custody April 29 without incident.
