Fashion has long been idolized by the LGBTQ community, and April 19 saw a fashion show that was LGBTQ on steroids.
Coming shortly after Fort Lauderdale Fashion Week, designer Juan De La Cruz brought his new couture collection to the Hotspots! Happening Out headquarters on North Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors.
“Juan was an artist I thought was super fashion-forward and amazing because he upsold and recycled clothes, which is something I love about artists,” model FayWhat?! said moments before the show.
She is a vocal advocate of avoiding “fast-fashion” in favor of reusing materials.
“Juan De La Cruz is a wonderful designer,” FayWhat?! added. “It’s all LGBTQ folks who are walking the runway. Lots of Black and Brown folks, which makes me happy.”
Fay reached out to the designer to make sure he was being inclusive. He was already on it and asked her for help.
“I do, I do [have diversity] but I need another girl. You available?” he asked Fay. She was, and she stole the show as one of the last models to walk the runway.
The show right after the sun went behind Hotspots! building, about 25 minutes before sunset. A who’s who of local business and fashion took seats that lined the red carpet runway.
The all-around inclusive fashion show was part of Wilton Manors’ monthly art walk, which runs down Wilton Drive to Five Points before taking a hair-pin turn down Dixie Hwy., which has become the center of a theater and art gallery district.
