Often marginalized, rarely celebrated. Black women and their contributions to humanity are too frequently overlooked, and governmental efforts are underway to erase them from the history books.
But April is Black Women’s History Month, and Legacy Builders held an event to bring them out of the shadows and into the spotlight.
“We are celebrating the legacy, liberation and love of Black women and our allies,” Legacy Builders’ Founder LaTonya Hopson said.
The event was at Violet’s and Zen’s in Wilton Manors. Several vendors from community organizations were there, including Poverello’s, Femmes of Distinction Society, Positive People Network, and more.
“We are honoring Black women,” Hopson said. “We are building actual stories tonight with leaders in the community that are dedicated to transformative work each and every day.”
While the month is coming to an end, Hopson and Legacy Builders are empowering everyone to carry the message and spirit into May and the rest of the year.
“I want us to understand the importance of not just visibility [of] Black people and Black women... but we can all agree that Black women are not just the cornerstone of society. We do get compliments every day on our strength. But today is more than that. It’s about our beauty, our brilliance, and our significance in our community and our society.”
