The front-runner in Florida’s deepest blue congressional district pulled no punches in his response to the State of the Union speech.
“This year’s State of the Union featured the ramblings of a sad, old lunatic,” said Elijah Manley, a Democratic candidate in U.S. House District 20. “America will be better off when Donald Trump and his fascist cronies are no longer in power. They will soon be held accountable for their crimes come November.”
A recent poll showed Manley with a slim lead over incumbent Representative Shelia Cherfilus-McCormick, who was indicted last November by a federal grand jury on theft and money laundering charges. Manley has repeatedly called for Cherfilus-McCormick to resign.
“I don’t know what her plan is,” Manley said. “She will be expelled and cannot run again.”
Meanwhile, Manley strongly disagreed with Trump’s claim that America is on a hot streak.
“He’s not focused on affordability, he’s focused on himself,” Manley said, adding that will not be a pretty picture.
“As time goes on, Trump will only deteriorate more and more in front of the American people’s eyes,” Manley said.
District 20, which covers parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties, is home to a large number of Black voters. Also running for the Democratic nomination are former Broward County Commissioner Dale Holness and rapper Luther Campbell.
The primary election is scheduled for August 18.
