AIDS Walk: A Resounding Success | WATCH

Waves crashed gently on the beach as the sun climbed higher in the sky. High-energy music got people going as they stretched out before walking A1A. The Florida AIDS Walk & Music Festival was underway.

Hundreds were there repping their teams in custom shirts. They perused booths sponsored by various service organizations including Broward House, Latinos Salud, TransInclusive Group and more.

Perhaps the most memorable organization was Impulse Group. They were clad in red shirts with a big white square and the words “Is Not A Crime” on the back. Each member wrote their own cause in the white block so their shirts read, for example, “Trans Is Not A Crime” and “Homeless Is Not A Crime.”

This year’s walk came with serious political vibes. With the Trump administration cutting funds for just about anything LGBTQ and the new Secretary of Health & Human Services believing that poppers cause AIDS, spreading real information and funding testing services is vital.

AHF produced the event, and will match funds raised by various organizations between 50%-100%. PRISM is a new beneficiary (getting 75% match). The group is an outreach organization that works to get information to young people and work with schools.

“Our first Florida AIDS Walk was a resounding success,” PRISM founder Maxx Fenning said. “We were so excited to welcome dozens of young people to walk with us and support our work to help queer youth here in South Florida.”

SunServe also had a prosperous day. From senior services director to the leader of their youth program, SunServe has passionate fundraisers. That spirit made them the top fundraising team.

SunServe CEO Tony Lima leads by example, and is the top individual fundraiser.

After the walk, it was time to party, even though the entertainment lineup suffered a last-minute blow.

Headliner Rita Ora canceled, citing a personal issue. Legendary DJ Spinderella still played a killer set. Also performing were Trinity K. Bonet of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” fame, and Latinsensation Rey Feliz.

You can still donate to your favorite team. AHF will match donations made through March 31.
