In a previous letter to the OutSFL editor (December 19, 2024 VOL. 2, Issue 51) regarding the independence of our library, the author stated that the Wilton Manors Library has 115 LGBTQ+ resources.

Keep in mind that the acronym LGBTQ+, possibly the key word source of the database search, has only been used fully since 2016 when the Q was added. Our library's holdings go back almost 75 years. Searching the catalogue for "Gay" shows 625 resources; for "Lesbian," 233; for "Homosexual," 102, etc. A librarian can help with a careful and accurate search to provide error-free information.

Furthermore, the Richard C. Sullivan Memorial Public Library in Wilton Manors is a partner in the resource sharing platform FLIN SHAREit. The Division of Library and Information Services and the Florida Library Information Network offer a statewide resource sharing system for Florida's libraries. Through our library, we have access to hundreds of thousands of resources from hundreds of public Libraries across the state. The usual wait time for delivery is two days. Therefore, independently, our Wilton Manors Library ensures access to LGBTQ literature and other resources with expansive opportunities for education. For over two generations, our library continues to be a robust LGBTQ inclusive city institution.

Then there is the state-wide book banning issue.

As reported in USA Today (April 2024), Florida had more books challenged for removal and banned than any other state during 2023 as attempted book bans reached the "highest levels ever documented," according to the American Library Association. Nearly 2,700 titles were targeted for restriction or removal in Florida schools and public libraries in 2023. That's 1,200 more than the state with the second-most challenges, Texas.

Book challenges primarily targeted works written by authors of color or members of the LGBTQ community, according to the ALA. In 2023, books "representing the voices and lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) individuals made up 47% of those targeted in censorship attempts," the ALA said.

It is vital, given the current far-right agenda in Florida and in the country, that our Wilton Manors Community maintain oversight over the materials in our library. We must have the ability to maintain our right to read from the position of an inclusive municipal community. Let's not assist the efforts of those who would erase the LGBTQ and other minority communities from our rightful place in the human family.

Consider: Under the Broward County Library System, one may return books to any branch library in the county. They are not returned to the source library. The many inclusive materials originating from the Wilton Manors Richard C. Sullivan Library therefore could find their way to any of the county branches — a greater risk for a challenge or a ban. Let's guard our heritage with close oversight. We do not ban books here.

How should we prioritize financial resources that benefit the widest group of people while celebrating our cultural heritage?

Independence is never free. A city's library, from ancient times, has been seen as a hallmark of civilization and enlightenment and a most valuable asset. From even before the days of Alexander the Great, a library has always been cherished as a temple of learning independent of religious and political extremism, a beacon of true democracy. Its presence enhances critical thinking and skill development for all citizens using it, providing valuable tools for life-long learning, encouraging responsibility and moral behavior, and providing technological access. A well-supported independent library strengthens the character and development of the citizenry. Ours is a municipal treasure very high up on the list of fiscal priorities.

The Richard C. Sullivan Independent Library of Wilton Manors is a memorial to the generosity of a fellow citizen and a donor. It stands as a testament to all who have sacrificed to enhance the intelligence and educational skills of our uniquely inclusive South Florida Community for 67 years when it started in the back of a small shop on Wilton Drive. Since its opening, how many children, young adults, adults, parents and seniors have walked through the doors of our library and learned more about accepting who they are and discovered the world we are called to live in and make better? How many children found within its walls safety from unwanted attention and resources to address bullying?

What better legacy does the community of Wilton Manors have for current generations and for those to come than the Richard C. Sullivan Memorial Independent Public Library?
