Is it too early to start thinking about spooky season? Absolutely not, especially when two classics are getting gorgeous new editions just in time for our fall reading piles.
Penguin Classics is bringing Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend and C. L. Moore’s Jirel of Joiry to its Speculative Fiction Special series on October 6, giving readers the perfect excuse to revisit two stories that helped shape horror and fantasy.
Matheson’s I Am Legend delivers vampires, a plague-ravaged Los Angeles and the terrifying loneliness of Robert Neville, who may just be the last surviving human. More than 70 years after its original publication, it still feels deliciously unsettling. The new edition also includes a foreword from horror favorite Joe R. Lansdale.
Then there’s Jirel of Joiry, celebrating one of fantasy’s groundbreaking female heroes. Moore’s fierce sword-and-sorcery heroine helped pave the way for generations of women in fantasy, and this new collection brings together all seven Jirel stories, plus three additional Moore classics and a new foreword by Mexican Gothic author Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
Vampires, fearless heroines and beautiful collectible hardcovers? Our spooky-season TBR just got a little longer.
I Am Legend and Jirel of Joiry arrive October 6 from Penguin Classics.
