OutSFL brought home three awards from the Florida Press Club’s annual Excellence in Journalism including first place in Headline Writing and Editorial Cartooning.
“Well done,” one judge wrote. “Headlines that are succinct that effortlessly communicate visual imagery along with their literal meaning.”
The three cover headlines submitted with the stories included:
- Have You Seen Me? Call the Wilton Manors Police Department at 954-390-2150
- DeSantis: Never Back Down. ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Law Gutted in Settlement
- Double Trouble. From Anita Bryant to Ron DeSantis: Florida’s Deep History of LGBTQ Hate
Cover headlines are usually a collaborate effort among multiple staff members. The Editorial Cartoons were submitted by Larry Printz, who also writes about the automotive industry for OutSFL.
Lastly, Steve Rothaus, a former reporter and editor from the Miami Herald, won second place for Serious Features.
The Rothaus submission for Serious Features included:
“Serious feature writing (TONS of competition in this category) Steve Rothaus’ profiles of people in the LGBTQ+ community are informative and entertaining reads,” one judge wrote.
“Congrats to Larry and Steve and our team effort,” Publisher Jason Parsley said. “We are always thrilled to win awards and look forward too many more in the coming years.”
