The Team Behind ‘Adult Best Friends’

Real life best friends Delaney Buffett and Katie Corwin have adapted some of their most memorable experiences for their debut feature, “Adult Best Friends.” The semi-autobiographical comedy is now available online after playing the festival circuit, including the Key West Film Festival, where Buffett received the Golden Key for Emerging Talent.

The plot follows the two childhood friends as their lives diverge through their 30s. After Katie’s on-screen boyfriend proposes, she plans a nostalgic trip with Delaney to their childhood beach town, intending to deliver the news in a more familiar setting. But the trappings and characters of this getaway mean that the reveal does not go as planned.

“Adult Best Friends” is the first feature length production from the duo and also stars Zachary Quinto, Mason Gooding, Cazzie David, Casey Wilson, Owen Thiele, Benjamin Norris, Carmen Christopher, Michael Rowland, Heather Mazur, Connor Hines, and Cory Walls who all “capture the joy of growing up with a best friendand the angst of potentially moving beyond them.”

The film is available exclusively on Max after a series of special screenings that allowed the filmmakers to still experience a live audience.

“It’s a small film, and it was low budget, and so we never really had big dreams of it being with a traditional theatrical release. So, we're excited,” Buffett said. “I think it'll be fun. It's a fun movie to have on a streaming platform.”

“Adult Best Friends” was partly shot in Mississippi and features main characters with the two leads’ real names. They utilized their relationships for casting, crew, and dramatized versions of things that they actually experienced.

Buffett explained that a lot of the time, she and Corwin took stories from the people in their lives and kind of blew them up. For Zachary Quinto’s role, Henry, the duo initially approached him with the idea before working with him on the dialogue, character, and background.

Corwin described Quinto as incredible and something of a mentor, which at times made filming scenes with him a bit daunting.

“He's like such a presence. And even though I know that he's so nice, I know that he's so funny, I was glad I was sitting in most of our scenes. I think my legs would've given out. I was really, really scared.”

Corwin explained that with the movie now available for streaming, the two friends will switch gears to social media and word of mouth after months of being on the ground for various showings and meet-ups, which she described as fantastic experiences.

“We feel so lucky to have done that, but now that you can actually watch it at home, we won't ask people to schlep out together. And ideally, people will just enjoy it and rewatch it and tell their friends to watch it.”
