Iair Said, the writer, director, and star of the queer Argentinian movie “Most People Die on Sundays” (Big World Pictures), deserves our admiration. In 72 minutes, he makes us run the gamut of emotions, sometimes in the same scene.
Screen Queen
Intentionally or not, Liza Minnelli has been a presence in the public eye since her birth. The daughter of screen legends Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli, Liza’s arrival on March 12, 1946, made headlines, and since then, she’s been singing and acting her way into our lives and hearts.
It’s only May, but Alison Brie and Dave Franco’s “Together,” which opens in July(!), is already being declared the year’s best horror movie. Don’t want to wait to see another excellent horror/slasher flick at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes? Eli Craig’s “Clown in a Cornfield” (RJLE/Shudder), with the most wonderful queer twists of its colorful sleeve, opens in theaters in May.
If you thought Paul Feig’s 2018 adaptation of Darcey Bell’s novel “A Simple Favor” was twisted and twisty, hang on to your oversized but chic hat, because the sequel, “Another Simple Favor” (Amazon/MGM/Lionsgate), also directed by Feig, is as snaking as a road in Capri (where the movie is set, by the way).
Gay filmmaker Christopher Landon, son of the late Michael “Little House on the Prairie” Landon, has established himself as writer and director of movies in the horror and thriller genres. He continues that trend with his new movie, “Drop” (Universal/Blumhouse).
Ang Lee’s “The Wedding Banquet” (Oscar-nominee for Best Foreign-Language Film) was released in 1993, pre-dating the writer/director’s other acclaimed queer-themed film, “Brokeback Mountain,” by 12 years.
Gay love is in the air! Queer filmmaker Andrew Ahn’s semi-remake of Ang Lee’s “The Wedding Banquet” is about to have its Spring theatrical release. Preceding it by a week or so is gay filmmaker Roshan Sethi’s “A Nice Indian Boy” (Levantine Films). Sethi, who wrote and directed the marvelous 2021 pandemic rom-com “7 Days,” has proven himself a filmmaker of merit.
Is anyone at Disney paying the least bit of attention?
Music documentaries, especially those of LGBTQ interest, continue to be very popular. In 2024 alone, there were several including “Let The Canary Sing” (about Cyndi Lauper), “Indigo Girls: It’s Only Life After All,” “Luther: Never Too Much” (about Luther Vandross), “Elton John: Never Too Late,” and “I Am Celine Dion.”
Now that Disney has shifted its focus to “live-action” adaptations of its classic cartoons (“Snow White” being the latest) and Latvia won an Oscar in 2025 for its 2024 animated feature “Flow,” it’s no exaggeration to say that the world of animation has been transformed.
