To celebrate Pride Month, OutSFL Entertainment Reporter Gregg Shapiro and veteran entertainment journalist John Hayden have picked their favorite LGBTQ movies. We will bring you their reviews every week in June.
John Hayden: This week is “Priscilla: Queen of the Desert.” There are so many reasons to love this movie. The cinematography in the Australian Outback is still breathtaking 30 years later. When Adam, played by a twinky Guy Pierce, sits in a giant high heel shoe atop a bus wearing a forty-feet long gown is a total mic drop.
The story is about three queens who need to get out of their tired routines in the city and jump at the chance to play a casino in the middle of nowhere. Along the way they encounter natives, rednecks and, ultimately, themselves.
Gregg Shapiro: This has a special place in my heart. It was the first movie I ever reviewed as a critic in print. This movie helped revive Terrance Stamp’s career. Guy Pierce is so dreamy and Hugo Weaving. These were all career reviving and career launching roles. It’s a joyous celebration of queerness and survival.
John Hayden: It also explores the contrasts of the “big city gays” versus the small, rural communities where LGBTQ is rarely seen or heard. While each of our three queens has their own personal gut check, they serve as the sounding boards and the glue to the others.
Gregg Shapiro: And the ping pong balls. Don’t forget the ping pong balls!
John Hayden: How could we?!
