Norman Extract's story is truly inspiring! From his early days in the fashion world to his current passion for building community in Fort Lauderdale, his journey has been one of innovation, leadership, and connection.

Extract was born in New York and attended both Cornell University and the Fashion Institute of Technology, which laid the foundation for his future career in fashion. At just 21 years old, he launched NORMAN STEPHEN ENTERPRISES LTD, an international sales and marketing agency. His company became the first of its kind to specialize in representing non-American high-end fashion designers in the U.S. and Canada.

With expertise in sales, merchandising, marketing, and advertising, Extract built an empire that spanned New York, Dallas, and Los Angeles. He taught foreign designers how to navigate the U.S. market and become their own importers, ensuring their success across North America. His company also played a key role in producing Fashion Week shows, photoshoots, and consulting for top brands like Guy Laroche, Torrante, and Paco Rabanne.

Through his extensive travel and global connections, Extract became a leader in building relationships that would benefit not only his clients but also himself as a sought-after consultant. After a highly successful career, Extract retired at just 36 years old in 1997 and moved to Fort Lauderdale.

Extract’s retirement marked the beginning of a new chapter focused on fostering a sense of community. He set a personal goal of uniting the LGBTQ community in Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors. To achieve this, he founded the Fort Lauderdale & Wilton Manors LGBTQ Social Meetup Group, which quickly became one of the largest and most active social groups for the LGBTQ+ community in South Florida.

The group, which has over 1,500 members, offers an alternative to the traditional bar and club scene by organizing a variety of inclusive events and activities such as brunches, dinners, theater outings, concerts, museum visits, and even more adventurous activities like kayaking, bowling, pickleball, and horseback riding.

A particularly special aspect of this group is its focus on inclusivity, with a dedicated space for lesbian members through their "For Women Only" events. This creates a supportive and welcoming environment for women to connect and engage in meaningful ways.

Extract’s dedication to bringing people together is evident in his upcoming New Year’s Day brunch event. On Jan. 1 at 12 p.m., members of the LGBTQ Social Group will gather at the iconic Tropics Grille located at 2000 Wilton Drive. A $25 buffet-style brunch will be featured. This event is open to the public. Tropics will open its doors at 11:30 a.m.
