Some organizations change lives through speeches. Others do it through advocacy. Front Runners & Walkers Fort Lauderdale does it one mile, one friendship, and one encouraging step at a time.
On Wednesday evening, July 22, I had the pleasure of catching up with the group during its weekly run at Holiday Park. The energy was contagious. Dozens of runners and walkers gathered with smiles, laughter, and a shared commitment to living healthier, happier lives. Within minutes they were off, spreading throughout Holiday Park and beyond, each person moving at their own pace but united by a common purpose.
It was inspiring to watch.
What struck me most wasn’t who ran the fastest. It was how genuinely everyone welcomed one another. Newcomers were greeted like old friends, experienced runners encouraged beginners, and everyone celebrated simply showing up. That sense of belonging is something our community can never have enough of.
Front Runners & Walkers Fort Lauderdale traces its roots to the international Front Runners movement, which began after the publication of Patricia Nell Warren’s groundbreaking novel The Front Runner. The Fort Lauderdale chapter was established in 1989 by local LGBTQ+ runners preparing for the New York City Marathon and has since grown into one of South Florida’s most respected LGBTQ+ athletic and social organizations. Today, the club welcomes runners, walkers, and allies of every age, background, and athletic ability, while promoting fitness, friendship, inclusion, and community service.
Under the leadership of President Eric Runyan and a dedicated volunteer board, the organization has become about much more than exercise. Members participate in local races, charity events, social gatherings, and community outreach, proving that fitness can also be a powerful vehicle for building lasting relationships and improving mental and physical well-being.
Organizations like Front Runners remind us that wellness isn’t measured only by miles logged or finish lines crossed. It’s measured by friendships formed, confidence restored, and lives enriched. In a world where isolation has become increasingly common, they have created a place where everyone belongs.
I also want to extend heartfelt appreciation to Over Easy Cafe and owner Cathy Cerniglia for their unwavering support of Front Runners & Walkers Fort Lauderdale. Over Easy Cafe has long been one of our community’s greatest allies, consistently supporting LGBTQ+ organizations through generosity, hospitality, and genuine love for the people they serve. Their commitment has helped strengthen countless community organizations, including Front Runners, and deserves its much-deserved recognition.
If you’re looking for a healthier lifestyle, meaningful friendships, and a welcoming community that will cheer you on every step of the way, lace up your shoes and join Front Runners & Walkers Fort Lauderdale. You’ll discover that the greatest finish line isn’t at the end of the run—it’s finding a community that makes you feel right at home.
