Every successful publication has familiar faces—the publisher, the writers, photographers, and personalities whose names readers know. Yet behind every issue is someone whose work often goes unnoticed, even though it shapes every page readers hold in their hands.

For more than 21 years, that unsung hero at Hotspots Magazine has been Frank Mendez.

While many readers may not recognize his name, they have admired his work for decades. Every cover, every feature layout, every advertisement, every logo refinement, and countless iconic images that have helped tell the story of South Florida’s LGBTQ+ community have been touched by Frank’s extraordinary creative vision. His work has never been just graphic design—it has been visual storytelling that has chronicled the pride, resilience, diversity, and growth of our community.

Born in Miami and raised in a proud Cuban family, Frank’s passion for creativity led him to earn a Bachelor of Science in Media Communications and Technology, with a minor in Communication Studies, from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated on the Dean’s List. He entered the publishing industry with a unique combination of artistic talent and technical expertise that would become the foundation of an exceptional career.

Frank began at Hotspots as a Graphic Artist before advancing to Production Manager and eventually Art Director. Along the way, he mastered every phase of magazine production—from desktop publishing, pre-press preparation, and deadline management to plate production and print execution. During the publication’s print heyday, he helped produce a perfect-bound weekly glossy magazine on a five-color Heidelberg press inside the company’s 15,000-square-foot production facility in Oakland Park.

As the publication evolved through changing technology and media platforms, Frank evolved with it. Recruited by Peter Clark, he helped shape a new corporate identity for the magazine while overseeing the entire creative process—from logo development and photo shoot coordination to final production. When Hotspots became Hotspots Happening Out, Frank helped create a unified visual identity that continues to define the brand today, including the publication’s recognizable Pride swoosh.

His commitment extended well beyond design. Frank also led the classifieds department, helping hundreds of local businesses create affordable, effective advertising that strengthened both their companies and the community they serve. He understood that every advertisement represented someone’s dream, and he treated each one with care and professionalism.

What truly separates Frank is not only his creativity, but his character.

Deadlines never intimidated him. Challenges never discouraged him. Recognition was never his motivation.

His focus was always on producing the very best magazine possible.

“In my business career, Frank is one of the most committed professionals I have ever worked with,” said Bobby Blair, Publisher of Hotspots Magazine. “His creativity is off the charts, but what truly separates Frank is his loyalty. The job always came first. He handled impossible production schedules like a seasoned veteran and never stopped striving for perfection. Many of the iconic images and branding that helped put South Florida’s LGBTQ+ community on the map were brought to life through his vision. Frank represents the very best of our profession, and he is truly one of the unsung heroes behind the success of Hotspots Magazine.”

Frank’s passion for craftsmanship extends beyond publishing. A lifelong learner, he taught himself the art of tailoring after inheriting a sewing machine. What began with simple projects grew into designing and constructing custom men’s suits from patterns he drafts himself. The same precision, patience, creativity, and attention to detail that define his tailoring have long defined his work in publishing.

For more than two decades, Frank Mendez has quietly helped shape one of South Florida’s most influential LGBTQ+ publications. He has never sought the spotlight, yet his creative fingerprints appear on thousands of pages that have informed, entertained, inspired, and connected our community.

Some people leave a legacy by standing in front of the camera.

Frank Mendez leaves his by making everything behind the scenes look extraordinary.

For more than 21 years, Hotspots Magazine has been better because of his loyalty, creativity, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to excellence. His name may not appear on every page, but his legacy lives on in every one of them.
