It’s nice to see that despite Ron DeSatanist trying to kill the arts in Florida, they are thriving. We’re seeing new companies like Latine Theatre, and now Kutumba Theatre Project is “coming out” of hibernation.
After several successful sold-out shows in South Florida and NYC, Kutumba is hitting the stage again with the East Coast premiere of “Spy for Spy,” by Kieron Barry. Directed by Kim Ehly, Artistic Director and founder of Kutumba Theatre Project, “Spy for Spy” is a series of six scenes that follow the relationship between Molly and Sarah, who couldn’t be more different, and yet they fall for each other. Audience members will randomly select from a stack of six songs to determine the order of the play for the following night, like a playlist shuffled. As with our memories, they can be jumbled, and no matter how they’re put together, they make sense. The play is a triumph, cleverly crafted, so neatly that the same story is accomplished every night, no matter what the order. “Spy for Spy” runs from July 10 through Aug. 3 at Empire Stage.

AUTHORS²
“Love, Mystery, and Cultural Identity: An Evening with Two Dynamic Authors” takes place Monday, June 30, at 6 p.m. at Island City Stage, 2304 N Dixie Hwy. Two compelling voices in contemporary fiction, combine as Greg Lindeblom, whose debut novel is “The Only Farang in Town,” joins the award-winning author Neil Plakcy, who will read an excerpt from “Blood Code,” the latest installment in his beloved Hawaiian mystery series. Each book explores the themes of love, identity, and cultural complexity through vastly different lenses. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to meet both authors, hear about their creative processes, and discover your next great read. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Admission is free.
NEW THEATER²
Another theater company is emerging on the South Florida scene. Last week we announced Latine Theatre, opening this summer, Gray Box Theater will be a flexible, state-of-the-art venue for live music, theater, spoken word, film, private events, and more — built to inspire and connect our entire community. It will be located at 1444 NE 26th Street, Wilton Manors, making it the third residential theater for our town. On Monday, June 23, at 6 p.m., it will host an investors’ unveiling and ghost light installation. This special gathering will mark the symbolic “first light” of the theater with the installation of the ghost light, a tradition in theater that keeps the stage illuminated — even in the dark — as a beacon of hope, protection, and the promise of future stories to come. All are welcome to offer their presence and support as the company unveils the vision for Gray Box Theater and shares exclusive founding investor opportunities starting at just $50/month.
