Some musicals are fun escapes. Others make you think, feel, and maybe even see yourself a little differently. Jagged Little Pill is one of those shows.
Now playing through June 28 at the Broward Center's Amaturo Theater, Slow Burn Theatre Company's production takes the music many of us grew up with and transforms it into a powerful story about family, identity, mental health, relationships, and the pressures people often carry behind closed doors.
Even if you know every word to Alanis Morissette's iconic songs, this is not simply a concert built around familiar hits. Instead, the music becomes part of a larger story that feels remarkably relevant today. Themes of belonging, self-discovery, addiction, and resilience are woven throughout the production, creating moments that are both heartbreaking and hopeful.
What struck me most was how honest the show feels. The characters are messy, complicated, and deeply human. No one is perfect, and that's exactly the point. In a world where social media often encourages us to present polished versions of ourselves, Jagged Little Pill reminds audiences that everyone is carrying something beneath the surface.
As always, Slow Burn delivers the kind of performances South Florida theatergoers have come to expect. The vocals are outstanding, the choreography keeps the energy moving, and the cast fully commits to the emotional weight of the material.
More than anything, this is a show that sparks conversation. Long after the final curtain, I found myself thinking about the characters, the music, and the very real issues explored on stage.
Sometimes the best theater entertains us. Sometimes it challenges us. Jagged Little Pill manages to do both.
