Island City Stage, Wilton Manors’ professional theatre exploring the LGBTQ+ culture, has announced a diverse list of productions for its 13th season. The theatre’s upcoming season features a diverse lineup of compelling productions that promise to captivate audiences with their bold storytelling and thought-provoking themes.
This season opens with an update of Off-Broadway's longest-running and most beloved musical, "The Fantasticks," running Oct. 17 – Nov. 17. In Island City’s production, the young lovers are portrayed as a gay male couple, each with a mother instead of fathers. Audiences will be enchanted by this fresh take on the classic musical, featuring cherished songs like "Try to Remember" and "Soon It's Gonna Rain."
The season will continue with Edward Albee's “A Delicate Balance," from Jan. 16 – Feb. 9. This production marks a milestone for Island City Stage, as it presents its first play without gay characters, while still resonating with Albee's distinct gay perspective.
Island City Stage partners with Gable Stage and Brevo Theatre to bring the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Fat Ham" to the Island City Stage from April 3 – May 4. The adaptation of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" offers a fresh perspective, centering on a gay, black man navigating family dynamics at a Southern BBQ.
"The Dying Gaul," running May 22 – June 15, is playwright Craig Lucas’ modern American tragedy about a grieving screenwriter navigating the seductive yet perilous world of Hollywood.
The season ends, with "At The Wedding,” running Aug. 21 – Sept. 21, a bittersweet, laugh-out-loud comedy that tackles big issues with humor and heart, by Bryna Turner.
Returning this year will be Island City Stage’s popular Women’s Night at the Theatre and Mimosa Sundays featuring a light bites reception and a post-show talkback (Mimosa Sundays are included in the Flexpass subscriptions). Also continuing will be the popular “Comedy After Hours” late-night performances featuring South Florida's best comedians bringing their uniquely warped versions of reality with killer stand-up comedy and a few other twists and surprises along the way.
