By showing the acclaimed documentary “Welcome to Chechnya,” Takashi Oyagi, chief strategic officer of the screening’s sponsor TradeStation, hopes audiences take away a vital message from it.
“After watching the film, I want people to think about the importance of human dignity, including LGBTQ rights,” Oyagi said. “So we really wanted to just have that opportunity for people, especially in this kind of divided world.”
The Human Rights Watch (HRW), an organization that investigates and exposes human rights abuses around the globe, is hosting a free film screening of the documentary on Nov. 13. Oyagi, who is a member of HRW Miami, said the group brings awareness and accountability to these injustices by pressuring governments and corporations.
“Welcome to Chechnya” follows a group of activists who confront a campaign, headed by Russian leader Ramzan Kadyrov, to detain, torture and execute LGBTQ people.
The screening, which will be held at Fort Lauderdale’s Gateway Theater at 6:30 p.m., will be followed by a Q&A and reception with HRW’s Europe and Central Asia associate director Tanya Lokshina. Seating is limited, but there’s still time to RSVP.
Lokshina was the ideal person to host the event because she has extensively investigated human rights issues in Russia and is a featured activist in the documentary, Oyagi said.
“She's got the direct experience. And then she writes such a strong, powerful report as well. So she's kind of a core part of the movie, and she's the perfect person to just explain what the film is.”
Lokshina will also speak about HRW’s efforts to help LGBTQ survivors escape from Chechnya and find refuge, according to its website.
Oyagi said HRW Miami wanted to bring the screening to Fort Lauderdale to extend their educational outreach.
For Oyagi, getting the message out to local communities couldn’t come at a more imperative time.
“It’s very timely, under this current situation, to really talk loudly about LGBTQ issues,” he said.
