“Blue Moon,” directed by Richard Linklater, takes viewers back to the evening of March 31, 1943, where we get a glimpse into the psyche of the tortured gay genius of the legendary lyricist, Lorenz Hart. The film screens on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 3:15 p.m. Later that evening, Ethan Hawke, who portrays Hart, will receive the Variety Virtuoso Award, and engage in a conversation about his extensive career.
“Castration Movie Part 1” is 4.5 hours long and is part of an anthology film with an expected 16-hour run time, it screens Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. “Christy” stars Sydney Sweeney as Christy Martin, who discovers a knack for knocking people out. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing, but her toughest battles unfold outside the ring: confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death, screens Tuesday, Nov. 4. Dylan O'Brien, the star of “The Maze Runner” and “Teen Wolf” series, will take part in an exclusive extended Q&A about his latest film, “Twinless” on Saturday, Nov. 1. Fort Lauderdale Film Festival
Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival and the Broward County Film Society’s 2nd edition of the Savoir-Faire Shorts Film Festival, takes place Nov. 6-9, at Savor Cinema in Fort Lauderdale. On the program: an opening night event Nov. 6, in Savor’s courtyard, then a screening of six short films. After the films, guests will return to the courtyard for a dessert buffet. Later that night spine-chilling thrills emerge with eight short films that promise The Creeps!
On Friday, Nov. 7, at 5:30 p.m., Savoir-Faire Shorts: Variety Pack #1 offers a thrilling mix of diverse genres. At 7:30 p.m., laughter takes center stage with The Comedy Club, featuring seven hilarious short films. That is followed by Late Night Shorts.
Saturday starts at 10 a.m. with short Docs and Delights: savor warm waffles and a rich espresso while reflecting upon the thought-provoking short documentaries. Noon brings Variety Pack #2 of six shorts, followed by “Family Ties,” nine films that delve into the intricate tapestry of human connections. Our Shorts, presented by Our Fund, is a collection of seven bold and emotionally resonant stories that illuminate the many facets of queer identity and connection. That will be followed by The OUTside Social, with cocktail specials and light bites. World Cinema 1 and 2 are separated by a Taste of Israel reception.
Sunday, Savoir-Faire Shorts: focuses on Made in Broward with homegrown storytelling starting at 1 p.m. At 2:30 p.m., enjoy a Taste of Florida reception and panel discussion in the courtyard. At the same time, the short documentary “Fiddler on the Moon” will screen.
Sunshine Celluloid #1 and 2 lead up to Made in Broward 2, and then, the closing night pizza and beer bash. Tickets are available for purchase in advance at fliff.com.
Norton Museum Film Series
Art and film come together as the Norton Museum of Art serves as a venue for Subtropic Film Festival at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, with a red-carpet premiere at the Norton. The opening night puts a spotlight on the Everglades, not only with the night’s featured documentary, but also through the exhibition of local artists whose work draws inspiration from the marshes of South Florida. For the Friday opening feature, South Florida filmmakers follow python hunters chasing down huge, invasive snakes in the dark of the Everglades in “The Python Hunt.” The film highlights environmental urgency through the eyes of snake hunters. On Saturday, Nov. 8, “River of Grass” blends archival footage, vérité, and dreamlike sequences to reflect on the region’s beauty, history, and ecological challenges.
