There’s nothing like a night of guilty pleasures. We all have them. (“Howard the Duck,” anyone?) But perhaps no genre has produced more of them than the horror genre. Now “Evil Dead the Musical,” which has had fans screaming for a generation, is coming to South Florida.

“If you’re a fan of the original cult classic films, then you’re in for a treat,” Alexander Zenoz said. The South Florida star is leading the production at Coral Springs Center for the Arts (The Center) Sept. 12-20.

“The whole show is very satirical and laughter filled. It takes you through all the genres and tropes of musical theater sounds while always lending an ear to the rock musical theater vibe.”

Zenoz plays events across the area, including regular gigs up and down Wilton Drive. His strong voice and stage presence force you to stop, listen, and generally improve your mood. Now, in the role of Ash, he’s tackling what is arguably the best rock-horror production of the 21st century.

“They break into a random cabin in the woods and along the way they find out there are demons that have been unleashed inside, all extending from this book called the ‘Necronomicon.’ Ash has to fight [the demons] and sing along and do everything to overcome them.”

A versatile artist, camp-horror has a special place in his heart. He was in “Big Easy Queens,” a movie set in New Orleans but shot in and around Wilton Manors.

“It’s such a great shift into this. There was so much from ‘Big Easy Queens’ bringing me into the cult classics. I’ve always liked horror movies, all of them, anything spooky or horror related. I’ve never had the chance to see ‘Evil Dead.’ In our movie, there are so many winks to the old cult classics.”
