Making a movie on a shoestring budget is an exhausting labor of love. Getting people to actually see it is a miracle. But now a couple of Wilton Manors entertainers have done it! “Big Easy Queens” is coming to Hulu.
Stars and creators Jennifer McClain and Eric Swanson, who performs under the name Miss Bouvèé, made the announcement during a huge NYC red carpet party.
“I'm incredibly excited,” McClain said. “We've been talking amongst the cast, and they all ask if this makes us Disney Princesses. I'm hoping it makes me a Disney villain!” (Disney owns Hulu.)
“Sharing the red carpet with so many queer icons, allies, and icons in the making was an incredibly humbling experience,” Swanson added. “Sharing it with this cast, and representing Wilton Manors, was my honor and privilege. I will never forget it.”
The film will be under the Hulu Has Pride tab and is expected to show up in the next week or so.
“Big Easy Queens” is set in New Orleans, but principle photography was done in and around Wilton Manors in 2022-2023. After being released in 2023, Swanson and director Erynn Dalton plotted out prime opportunities on the film festival circuit.
While that helped bring early attention to the film, it needed a boost.
“Nothing in the film industry is instant or quick. We had to be patient,” Swanson said.
He says getting the House of Mouse’s attention is a result of solid networking and relationships. “Hulu/ Disney + came out of a personal connection made years ago; proving it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”
When it comes to getting clicks, McClain is ready to do her part.
“If I have to stream it on a loop on all my devices, I will. We got a really warm reception for the ‘Big Easy Queens’ announcement!”
